Skerlos Featured in University Record

skerlosME Associate Professor Steve Skerlos has been featured in The University Record for his work concerning government subsidies of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs).

As reported in The Record, Skerlos recently co-authored an article for the academic journal Energy Policy with James Winebrake, chair of the Department of Science, Technology and Society/Public Policy at Rochester Institute of Technology.

The article, published in January, argues for an improved method by which subsidies are allotted for PHEVs. They suggest that the administration identify areas where the social benefits of electric transportation are strongest, then target subsidies in those areas. Moving away from the "blanket subsidies" that are currently in place would be advantageous to the sales and environmental effectiveness of PHEVs. "The idea of a one-size-fits-all technology has failed us many times before in automotive policy," said Skerlos.

Skerlos also serves as director of the Environmental and Sustainable Technologies Laboratory
