Ni Receives Four Awards in Relation to Education and Engineering

junniPlease join us in congratulating ME Professor Jun Ni for several recent awards he has received. Ni is the SM Wu Manufacturing Science Collegiate Professor of Mechanical Engineering in the College of Engineering and received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering form the University of Wisconsin. Ni has contributed much to his field this last year, receiving four different awards in relation to education and engineering.

He received the first prize National Medal in Higher Education, awarded by the Ministry of Education, People's Republic of China for his contribution to international cooperation in higher education. The Ministry of Education in China is the agency of the State Council which regulates all aspects of the educational systems in mainland China.

He also received the Distinguished Service Award by the Chinese Institute of Engineers, North America, for his contributions to the advancement of manufacturing science and engineering. The Chinese Institute of Engineers is a non-profit professional organization of Chinese-American engineers, scientists and other professionals with the objective to promote Science, Engineering, Technology and Mathematics in all communities across the United States and to provide recognition to the APA professionals at the national level.

The Magnolia Gold Medal is his third award, given by the Shanghai Municipal government for his contributions to the advancement of Shanghai. He received this award for promoting educational cooperation between Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the University of Michigan, building a relationship of mutual benefit and development in Chinese and American universities.

Last of all he received the Best Paper award on his research, "A Finite Element Based Model for Electrochemical Discharge Machining in Discharge Region," co-authored by Chenjun Weiat, at the 9th International Conference on Frontiers of Design and Manufacturing. This conference was initiated by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and is held every two years by the universities of the Minister of Education.

Ni has had a very busy year and his multiple awards are a testament to his hard work.
