Winter Design Exposition Set for April 14

The Winter 05 Design Exposition will be held at the U-M Duderstadt Center connector and atrium between 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 14.

The expo will showcase undergraduate design and manufacturing courses in Mechanical Engineering (ME 250, 350, and 450) and will be joined by students from IOE 424 - Practicum in Production and Service Systems, and from ENG 450 - Multidisciplinary System Design. Each of these courses features design projects that require creative application of fundamental engineering concepts toward the manufacture of proof-of-concept prototypes or realizable production and service plans. These outcomes and their accompanying posters and presentations will be on display during the afternoon at the Design Expo.

The presentations include component designs from ME 250, mechanism designs from ME 350, and full system designs from the senior capstone design courses ME 450 and ENG 450. ME 450 students will be presenting diverse and complex systems such as bio-diesel reformers, biomedical tensiometers, and manufacturing inspection machines, while students from across the College of Engineering will be demonstrating a collection of sensor and actuator projects for the Mars Science Laboratory developed in ENG 450.

The department is pleased to be joined for the first time this year by students from IOE 424. This course is focused on industry projects that cover the gamut of industrial and operations engineering training, resulting in real world implementation of student outcomes within industry. Such multidisciplinary engineering skills, as exhibited at the Design Expo, will continue to be a major theme of design education in the coming years.

All of these projects are possible thanks to the active involvement of many faculty and industrial sponsors. The department is especially grateful to NSK for their sponsorship of the Winter 05 Design Expo.
